No caravan owner wants to use their insurance, but when the unexpected strikes, whether it’s storm damage to your static caravan or an accidental prang when towing your tourer, knowing how to claim makes all the difference.
Making a caravan insurance claim is usually a very straightforward process. Here is exactly what you need to do to get your claim moving and get back to enjoying your holidays.
Step 1: Prioritise safety at the scene
Your immediate safety is the top priority.
- Accidents: Check everyone is safe and call emergency services if needed. For tourers, you are legally required to stop and exchange details. If you are blocking traffic, use warning triangles and hazard lights.
- Extreme weather: If your static caravan is damaged by floods or storms, do not re-enter it until you are completely sure it is safe.
Step 2: Gather your evidence
Before leaving the scene, collect as much information as possible, that is relevant to the situation at hand:
- Get names, contact details, insurance info, and vehicle registrations of any third parties involved.
- Take down the names and phone numbers of any witnesses.
- Photograph the damage, road conditions, and the wider scene from multiple angles.
- If the police attend, ask for the incident reference number.
- In the instance of theft or vandalism, do not touch anything. Wait for the police, note any forced entry, and list what is missing.
Step 3: Call your insurer promptly
Do not delay. Many insurers operate a 24/7 helpline and require you to report incidents within 24 to 48 hours. Have your policy number ready, explain the facts, and note down the claim reference number they give you. They will advise if you need emergency recovery or repairs.
Step 4: Submit your claim form accurately
Whether online or via email, fill out your claim form with care.
- Stick to the facts and avoid speculating.
- Attach your photos, police reference numbers, and any receipts.
- If claiming for contents, provide a detailed list of items, their age, and approximate value.
Step 5: Prepare for assessment and repairs
For significant damage, your insurer will likely send an assessor to decide if it’s economical to repair the caravan, or if it’s a total loss. If repairs are approved, you will usually need to book your caravan into an insurer-approved repair centre.
Step 6: Review your settlement
Before closing the claim, make sure you are fully satisfied:
- Repairs: Thoroughly inspect the work and test all systems (electrics, water, towing gear) to ensure they are back to their pre-incident condition.
- Total loss: Ensure the settlement figure fairly reflects your caravan’s market value, age, and condition at the time of the loss.
Step 7: Keep a paper trail
Log all calls with your insurer (noting dates, times, and who you spoke to) and save all emails. If you have to pay for emergency parts or recovery out of pocket, check your coverage first and keep every single receipt to ensure you are fully reimbursed.
