I have been visiting this beautiful island since I was 10 years old and it has become our second home! We love it so much that we chose to get married here and the day couldn’t have been more perfect.
With its traditional Greek charm, friendly local people and delicious food, this stunning island has stolen my heart.
Kefalonia features tiny villages with colourful houses, superb beaches with crystal clear waters. It’s here that you can get away from it all, have the beach all to yourself and find a local taverna serving freshly caught fish and a cold bottle of Mythos (beer) or glass of Robola (wine).
The centre of the island is where you can find Mount Ainos, take a drive to the top above the clouds and watch birds of prey soar through the skies or see wild horses roaming free.
The capital Argostoli has lots to offer from clothes shops, local tavernas and bars or you can simply take a stroll along the harbour front watching the fishermen come in with their daily catch or watch the Caretta Caretta turtles swim along by the boats waiting for some fish scraps.
There is plenty to do on the island, we like to hire a car each time and take ourselves off to one of the many deserted coves or take the car ferry to the neighbouring island of Ithaca which is even quieter than and just as perfect as Kefalonia.
I’ve stayed in most resorts on the island including Lassi, Scala and Lourdas but my favourite places to stay are in the villages such as Assos or more recently in Davgata in the hills just along the coast from Argostoli.
We’ve stayed in hotels, apartments, villas and local houses and I’ve not had a single bad experience in any one of them but I feel at home most when I can go to the local market, try out my best Greek and buy local produce ready to fire up the BBQ, sit back in the hammock and listen to the donkeys, birds and insects in the hills. I’ve even become pretty good at cooking Kefalonia Meat pie!
If you’re looking for a lively nightlife and fish and chips then this may not be the place for you but if you fancy getting away from the hustle and bustle, trying delicious home cooked food, spending your evening with a bottle of wine listening to a local bouzouki band then you may find everything you need right there on Kefalonia.
